Vol. 519 No. 5

Written Answers. - Hospital Services.

John Perry

Question:

207 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Health and Children when HIV screening programmes will be available in Sligo; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14336/00]

The provision of HIV services in Sligo is a matter for the North Western Health Board in the first instance. I assume the Deputy is referring to the introduction of the routine antenatal testing programme for HIV. I have been informed by the North Western Health Board that the board has been engaged in discussions and training with relevant staff to introduce routine antenatal testing in Sligo General hospital. Funding has been provided by my Department for this purpose since 1999. Laboratory equipment has recently been purchased at the hospital for the purposes of the introduction of the programme and I understand that the programme will commence there in the coming weeks.
