Vol. 519 No. 5

Written Answers. - Attention Deficit Disorder.

Jack Wall

Question:

302 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the stage of his Department's research into attention deficit hyperactive disorder in the prison system; the stage of the working group on young offenders; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14558/00]

I have commissioned a survey of the health status of prisoners which is being undertaken by the department of health promotion at NUI Galway. I understand that this study will give some indication of the prevalence of ADD/ADHD in the prison population as well as a variety of other health related issues involv ing prisoners. When the results are available, I would hope to publish them without undue delay.

My colleague, the then Minister of State, Deputy Fahey, established the juvenile justice review group in July 1998 to inquire into the increasing number of children appearing before the children's court and to look at intervention and prevention measures as a means of keeping children out of court. The group is in the process of drafting its report and it is expected to be completed by the end of the summer.
