Vol. 519 No. 5

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Ulick Burke

Question:

38 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Finance the current position and up to date state of planning on the south Galway flood alleviation project; the expenditure to date; the extent of design completed; the starting date of work on any part of any scheme; and if the Office of Public Works has prioritised part of these works. [14311/00]

The steering group, established by the Minister of State following the 10 January meeting in Gort, County Galway, at which all local public representatives were present, to bring forward proposals for the most efficient and effective usage of the funds provided in the 2000 budget for alleviating the effects of flooding in south Galway, have initially identified schemes for the Mannin Cross and Cregclare areas for priority investigation and development of plans with a view to bringing schemes to statutory public exhibition stage later this year.

Flood relief scheme proposals for the following areas have also been identified for attention: the Kilchreest area involving the taking of water from the Owenshree river below Kilchreest to the Aggard stream and on to the Dunkellin river catchment; the Termon area which involves the transfer of flood waters away from the south Galway area to the adjoining Fergus river catchment area in County Clare and the Kiltiernan-Ballinderreen areas, which would necessitate the original scheme for the area, which was carried out by private individuals, being revisited and investigated and designed in a comprehensive manner.

The feasibility of carrying out other works at the Boleyneendoorish channel and a number of road culvert sites recommended in the major south Galway flood study report and flooding problems in Roo Demesne are also being investigated. As the various proposals are only at the feasibility stage, expenditure on fees has been committed but not yet paid. Part of the work has been carried out by the engineering services staff in the Office of Public Works.
