Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

88 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Finance the work being done by the working group advising him on restructuring of the banking sector; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14293/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 40 and 88 together.

The working group on strategic issues facing the banking sector was established by me in Nov ember 1999. It is made up of representatives of the Department of Finance and the Central Bank.
The working group issued invitations to relevant organisations to make submissions. Submissions were received, mainly during February and March, from the industry associations, trade unions and the main banks. On foot of these submissions, the working group has had discussions with a number of organisations.
I expect the working group to submit its report to me in the near future.
