Pat Rabbitte

Question:

41 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his proposals for a tax on plastic shopping bags and a landfill tax; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14713/00]

Following a public consultation process, my Department is at an advanced stage in the development of specific mechanisms to implement the Government's commitment to tax plastic shopping bags. I expect very shortly to bring proposals to Government in this regard.

The possibility of introducing a landfill levy to encourage the diversion of waste from landfill is currently under consideration.
