Vol. 519 No. 7

Written Answers. - National Car Test.

Ivor Callely

Question:

93 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of cars that have failed the national car test to date; the main reasons for such failures; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14596/00]

By 21 May 2000, 118,427 cars had undergone the national car test – NCT – for the first time, of which a total of 65,473 were refused test certificates. Of these, 50,737 cars have undergone a first retest, resulting in test certificates being granted for a further 43,094. The main reasons for failure are defective brakes, excessive exhaust emissions, structural weakness in bodywork, and defective steering and-or suspension.
