Dáil Éireann debate -
Tuesday, 30 May 2000

Vol. 520 No. 1

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business, I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 31 from Deputy John Bruton. I now call on Deputy John Bruton to raise the matter.

I move that it is expedient that Dáil Éireann adjourn under Standing Order 31 to consider a motion, preferably without debate, which notes the Tánaiste's interview with the Irish Independent, published on Saturday 27 May, and which expresses the opinion that Members of the Oireachtas should not publicly call for particular verdicts in criminal cases that have not yet been heard in court because this is damaging to the judicial process and creates problems for jury selection and, therefore, censures the Tánaiste for her remarks in the interview in question.

Having considered the matter fully, the Ceann Comhairle does not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31. Therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
