Question:

228 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will have arrangements made in view of the proposals (details supplied) by the Dental Technicians Association of Ireland regarding a nomination to the incoming Dental Council; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15184/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 195 and 228 together.

The term of office of the current Dental Council will expire on 12 November 2000. This will be the next opportunity for making appointments barring the possibility of a casual vacancy arising. I am constrained by the Act establishing the Dental Council in the number and manner of persons I can appoint to the Dental Council. I also need to ensure that as wide a variety of appropriate interests as possible is included in the final composition of the Dental Council.

However, I will give full consideration to the question of including the Dental Technicians Association of Ireland's nominee when I make appointments to the Dental Council.
