Róisín Shortall

Question:

416 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science the current position regarding the long promised centre for deaf studies in Trinity College; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15371/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 394 and 416 together.

Following its consultation with various interests in the field, the Higher Education Authority has recently submitted a report to my Department on the proposal to establish a centre for deaf studies in Trinity College Dublin. The authority concludes that there is a strong case for the establishment of the centre. I am favourably disposed to such a centre. However, a number of practical issues need further clarification and I have asked my officials to liaise with the authority in this regard.
