Vol. 520 No. 1

Written Answers. - Social Insurance.

Michael Bell

Question:

42 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the additional revenue generated for the social insurance fund by increasing the upper salary limit of contributing employees by £500 and £1000. [15045/00]

An increase of £500 and £1,000 to the employee ceiling would produce a yield to the social insurance fund of £3.6 million and £7 million, respectively, in a full year. This would affect approximately 246,000 employments.

It is general policy to increase the ceiling each year, in line with the increase in earnings. In budget 2000 the employee ceiling was raised by £1,100 to the current ceiling of £26,500. This took effect from the beginning of April.
