Vol. 520 No. 1

Written Answers. - Proposed Legislation.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

69 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs when he will introduce promised legislation to provide a framework for the introduction of the personal retirement savings accounts; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15012/00]

As set out in the recent legislative programme published by Government, I plan, subject to Government approval, to publish an occupational pensions Bill by late summer. Work on the preparation of the Bill is well under way and one of its key features will be the provision of a legislative framework for the introduction of personal retirement savings accounts. It is hoped that this will facilitate increased savings for pensions and provide a vehicle to extend supplementary pensions coverage overall, especially to people who have no such cover at present, as set out in the Pensions Board report Securing Retirement Income.
