Vol. 520 No. 1

Written Answers. - Fishing Seasons.

Phil Hogan

Question:

91 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the reason 12 May 2000 was not regarded as the opening of the fishing season for snap net salmon fishermen; if he will extend by one day the fishing season for these fishermen from 14 August 2000 to 15 August 2000; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14877/00]

The applicable by-law provides that the close season for snap net fishing ends at midnight on 11 May. The by-law also provides that, until 11 June, snap net fishing is prohibited from 6.00 a.m. on each Friday until 6.00 a.m. on the following Saturday. Accordingly, fishing was allowed on 12 May 2000 before 6.00 a.m.

I have no plans to extend the snap net fishing season.
