Question:

153 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the capital programmes contained in the national development plan and funded by her Department that have commenced or will commence in the Westmeath constituency in 2000; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15466/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 152 and 153 together.

The national monuments and historic properties, national parks and wildlife, waterways, under the umbrella of Waterways Ireland, and the arts divisions of my Department will have a total expenditure of approximately £300 million under the National Development Plan 2000-06. Apart from waterways, it is not yet possible to give an estimate of the amount of expenditure which will be undertaken under the plan in the Westmeath constituency during 2000. In the case of waterways I can say that the following projects will commence in the Westmeath area in 2000: deep gate landing jetties at the 22nd, 23rd and 24th locks, i.e. Thomastown-Riverstown area; and completion of canal barge project at Mullingar-Thomastown.
