Question:

109 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the action he has taken in relation to unprovoked attacks on young males in the Dublin area; the initiatives which he announced at a recent conference; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14846/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 42 and 109 together.

As I stated in my reply of 18 April 2000, a total of 27 unprovoked attacks on young males, aged 25 or younger, were recorded by the Garda Síochána in the Dublin metropolitan region for the period 1 January 2000 to 31 March 2000. I have already publicly indicated my concern, particularly in relation to the savagery of these types of attack and I can assure the House that no effort will be spared in bringing the perpetrators to justice. I understand from the Garda authorities that they have responded to such attacks with increased high visibility patrolling in areas with identified problems, and areas where large numbers of young people congregate. In addition, I understand that all members of the Garda Síochána have been instructed to utilise their powers under public order legislation to full effect when dealing with such incidents. I should mention also that crime prevention advice in relation to this matter is also given to young males through the schools programme, where appropriate.
