Vol. 520 No. 3

Written Answers. - Hospital Services.

Paul Bradford

Question:

91 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will provide funding and resources to ensure that extra beds will be provided for Alzheimer patients at Mount Alvernia Hospital, Mallow, County Cork. [15749/00]

The provision of services for Alzheimer patients in County Cork is a matter for the Southern Health Board. The Deputy will be aware that the Southern Health Board has launched its policy document on Services for Older People entitled Ageing with Confidence. The board is currently in the process of appointing a consultant in the psychiatry of old age and I understand that in-patient and day hospital facilities will be made available as part of this service for the treatment of Alzheimer patients. I am informed by the board that it is not part of its policy to provide additional beds for Alzheimer patients at Mount Alvernia Hospital.
