Vol. 520 No. 5

Written Answers. - Closed Circuit Television Cameras.

Michael Creed

Question:

155 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if it is the exclusive function of the Garda to provide traffic cameras to detect speeding and dangerous driving; and if local authorities have any say in the provision of these cameras. [16219/00]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that section 42 of the Road Traffic Act, 1994, provides that a road authority may, with the consent of the Garda Commissioner, provide and maintain on public roads in their charge equipment, for example, fixed speed cameras for the detection of speeding offences as provided for in section 47 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961.
