Written Answers. - National Library.

Enda Kenny

Question:

134 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the number of vacancies that exist in the National Library; the role, remit and responsibilities of the Director of the National Library; the reason no qualified director has been appointed to the National Library; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16992/00]

There are currently seven vacancies in the National Library of Ireland which the Department is in the process of filling.

The Director of the National Library of Ireland is responsible for the day to day administration, management, control and efficient operation of the organisation; the development of the library and its collections; ensuring that a high service is provided to library users; the effective and efficient deployment of financial, staffing and other resources to achieve these objectives.

The serving director who is currently on a two year contract which commenced on 15 November 1999 is eminently qualified to carry out these duties.

The Civil Service and Local Appointments Commission has held two competitions to fill the post on a permanent basis however no suitable candidate was found on either occasion.
