Vol. 521 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Seán Haughey

Question:

302 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will grant a concessionary teacher to St. Monica's school, Edenmore, Dublin 5; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17276/00]

The staffing of a primary school for a particular year is determined by reference to the number of pupils enrolled in the school on 30 September of the previous year. The actual number of mainstream posts sanctioned is determined by reference to a staffing schedule. The staffing schedule is determined for a particular year following discussions with the managerial authorities and the INTO.

The current staffing of this particular school is a principal and two mainstream class teachers based on an enrolment of 78 as at 30 September 1998. The school also has the services of a shared special additional assistant.

The enrolment as at 30 September 1999, on which the staffing for the 2000-2001 school year is based, was 77 which means there will be no change in the staffing for the next school year. Unfortunately, there is no basis whereby I can grant a concessionary post to the school. However, the school may wish to examine its position in relation to developing status. The awarding of a developing school post is conditional on a school satisfying specific criteria. These criteria were outlined in Circular 11/00, which was recently issued to all schools. The school may contact officials of my Department in this regard should the criteria apply.
