Vol. 521 No. 6

Written Answers. - Pigmeat Sector.

Seymour Crawford

Question:

24 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the number of pig farmers in the border region who have received compensation under the special fund; the number of other applications received; when they can expect payment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17438/00]

Brendan Smith

Question:

63 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if he will provide an update of payments made to pigmeat producers in the north west counties who suffered extreme hardship arising form the downturn in European and world market prices for pigmeat; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17680/00]

I propose to take Questions 24 and 63 together.

To date, 99 pig farmers have received payment under the special aid scheme for pig producers. A total of 169 applications were received before the closing date. Once the necessary documentation is submitted to my Department, indicating compliance with the terms of the scheme, payment is made without delay.
