Vol. 522 No. 2

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

Michael Ring

Question:

323 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs when an oral hearing for a person (details supplied) in County Mayo to progress her claim for the one parent family allowance will take place. [17987/00]

The person's application for a one parent family allowance was disallowed by a deciding officer on the basis that she had not made appropriate efforts to obtain adequate maintenance from her spouse for herself and her children.

Her appeal against this decision to the independent social welfare appeals office was considered by an appeals officer who is of the opinion that an oral hearing is necessary. This will be arranged as soon as possible.

Question:

325 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs when a person (details supplied) in County Sligo will receive a reply to her appeal regarding her application for an old age pension. [17992/00]

The person concerned claimed an old age non-contributory pension on 15 July 1999. The claim was disallowed as the person's means exceed the statutory limit. The person then appealed the decision of the deciding officer to the independent Social Welfare Appeals Office.

In accordance with the statutory procedures, the relevant departmental papers and comments of the social welfare services office were sought. An appeals officer, having considered all the evidence presented, has disallowed the appeal. The appeals officer's decision issued to the person on 21 June 2000.

As the Deputy is aware, both the deciding officer and the appeals officer's decisions are made independent of me as Minister.
