asked the
Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs
the names and number of consultants employed by him or his Department in each of the past three years; the total cost involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Consultants are commissioned by my Department to carry out specific assignments, whether in relation to policy issues, to aspects of the administration of the Department's schemes and services, or in the provision of technical expertise not otherwise available within the Department.
A total of 84 consultancy firms have been employed by my Department during the period from July 1997 to date. The total cost involved was £2,583,806 (including VAT).
A schedule listing all the consultants involved, is attached.
It should be noted that I had no hand, act or part in the selection process in relation to any of these:
