Vol. 522 No. 2

Written Answers. - Conservation Works.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

356 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands when it is proposed to commence conservation work at Carrigfoyle Castle, Carrigfoyle, County Kerry as outlined in correspondence to a person (details supplied) in County Kerry; if she will provide funding for the provision of flood lights for the castle; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18280/00]

The survey drawings for Carrigfoyle Castle have recently been completed. The proposed works would involve safety works, re-flooring of the small chambers and external re-pointing, but there are no plans to provide floodlighting at the site. Consideration is being given to undertaking this project as part of my programme under the national development plan. Any such project is likely to have to be put to tender given the existing commitments of the direct labour force in Dúchas, the heritage service of my Department. Depending on the level of response to tenders, works are not likely to commence until 2001.
