Vol. 522 No. 2

Written Answers. - Asylum Seekers.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

56 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Finance if he has satisfied himself that there is adequate funding in the finance estimates to provide the necessary accommodation for asylum seekers for the remainder of this financial year; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18192/00]

The cost of accommodating asylum seekers is met through the Votes of the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform and the Office of Public Works. The costs are determined by the numbers of asylum seekers and the type of accommodation provided. On the basis of the numbers expected to seek asylum in the country this year, I am satisfied sufficient funding has been provided in the respective votes. Should additional funding be required before the end of the year, the Oireachtas will be asked to vote the necessary expenditure.
