Vol. 522 No. 3

Written Answers. - Registration of Title.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

223 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the ongoing long delays for persons awaiting title deeds from the Land Registry office; the reason for the delay in an application by a person (details supplied) in Dublin 9; and if he will undertake to expedite this matter as soon as possible. [18782/00]

I am informed by the Registrar of Titles that this application refers to a transmission on death which was lodged in the Land Registry on 28 April 2000.

Due to the current buoyancy of the property market, there has been an 85% increase in the intake of dealings into the Dublin section of the Land Registry for the period January to April 2000 as against the same period last year. As a result, there is, at present, a waiting time of approximately 19 weeks for processing such applications.

I am well aware of the problems which have arisen in the Land Registry over a period of time due to the increase in applications for Land Registry transactions caused by the current economic climate and the buoyancy of the property market. I assure the Deputy that I have taken steps to address these problems by recruiting and training extra staff and by allocating added resources which I am confident will improve the service in time.
