Vol. 522 No. 3

Written Answers. - Tobacco Advertising.

Willie Penrose

Question:

64 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Health and Children when he will publish the proposed new regulations to govern tobacco advertising; the way in which it is intended to apply the regulations in regard to publications from abroad which circulate here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18547/00]

I have advised the tobacco industry here that no further advertising other than limited retail and trade advertising will be allowed after 1 July 2000. With regard to imported publications I am currently considering proposals to restrict or prohibit, if necessary, the importation for sale of newspapers, magazines or publications containing tobacco advertising.

My main concerns in this area are the promotion and protection of public health and children and the elimination of childhood tobacco addiction.

Furthermore, on my instructions a comprehensive new tobacco Bill is being prepared in my Department which will deal with a wide range of tobacco issues including advertising.
