Vol. 522 No. 4

Written Answers. - Departmental Appointments.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

202 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the names and number of appointees to state agencies, bodies or boards made by him in the past 12 months; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18986/00]

The statutory agencies operating under the aegis of my Department are the Pensions Board, the Combat Poverty Agency and Comhairle.

The Pensions Board was established in December 1990 under the Pensions Act, 1990, and comprises fifteen members including the chairperson. The terms of office of the board members will expire on 20 December 2000. I have not made any appointments to the Pensions Board in the past 12 months.

The Combat Poverty Agency, CPA, was established in September 1986 under the Combat Poverty Agency Act, 1986. There are currently thirteen Board members. During the past 12 months, I re-appointed Mr. Hugh Frazier, director, and Ms Clare Farrell, staff representative, to the board and have also appointed the following members: Ms Rachel Farrell, 14/09/99*; Mr. Fintan Farrell, 14/09/99; Mr. Benny Devlin, 14/09/99; Mr. Niall O'Keefe, 14/09/99; Ms Alice Robertson, 14/09/99; Ms Maria Corrigan, 08/03/00; Mr. Michael Waugh, 08/03/00.

* Ms. Farrell has since resigned from the board.

Comhairle was established on 12 June 2000 under the Comhairle Act, 2000, and comprises 20 members including a chairperson.

This new organisation replaced the National Social Services Board and the information service provided by the National Rehabilitation Board with a new mainstream information and support service from a network of local centres for people with disabilities.

The board of the new organisation is primarily drawn from the membership of the former National Social Service Board, 18 members, which I appointed in 1998 with the addition of two new members.

The following is a list of the members of the board appointed on 12 June 2000: – Dr. Donal de Buitleir, chairman; Mr. Peter Sands; Mr. Tom Mulherin; Mr. Michael McCloone; Ms Rosarii Moylan; Ms Mary Murphy; Ms Carol Brill; Ms Mary Fitzgerald; Ms Claire Young; Ms Mairin Byrne; Mr. Martin Naughton; Mr. John Hogan; Mr. Terry O'Sullivan; Mrs. Kitty King; Mr. Tom Doherty; Mr. Billy Mahoney; Ms Olive Howlett; Mr. Alan O'Connor; Mr. Oliver Wilkinson; Mr. John Gallahue.
