Vol. 522 No. 4

Written Answers. - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

269 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will retain the present teacher quota in a school (details supplied) in County Monaghan; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18934/00]

As the Deputy is aware the staffing of primary schools is determined by reference to the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous school year. This is in accordance with guidelines agreed between this Department and the education partners.

The enrolment at the school in question has increased from 223 pupils on 30 September 1998 to 232 pupils on 30 September 1999. I am pleased to advise the Deputy that this enrolment entitles the school to appoint an additional teacher for the 2000-01 school year.

The appointment of this, the eighth mainstream class teacher, also allows the school principal to become an administrative principal for the 2000-01 school year.
