Question:

273 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science the proposals he has to improve the level of service provided to people with autism in the Waterford constituency; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18943/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 272 and 273 together.

My Department does not have precise information on the total number of pupils in Waterford who have been diagnosed as having autism.

Under present arrangements, children with autism have access to a range of special educational support services. The precise nature of the support provided will depend on the severity of the condition in each individual case. These supports include resource teachers in primary schools, special classes in primary schools and teaching support in special schools.
My Department is currently making provision for the establishment of four special classes in the Waterford area, two in special schools and two in primary schools. These classes will have the capacity to cater for a total of 24 pupils with autism.
Each class, which caters for a maximum of six pupils, receives the support of a class teacher, a special needs assistant and enhanced capitation. In addition, the relevant health authority provides an outreach support service.
My Department's inspectorate will be keeping the education provision for pupils with autism in the Waterford area under review. The need to provide additional supports for the pupils in question will be considered in this context.
