Vol. 522 No. 4

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

308 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Education and Science the position with regard to the plans for the refurbishment of Coláiste Einde, Salthill, County Galway; if it is proposed to refurbish the old building; if there are plans for a new school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19113/00]

It is planned to provide entirely new accommodation for the student community of Coláiste Einde. This decision was taken because the estimated cost of refurbishing the existing accommodation, when compared with the cost of providing new accommodation, represents poor value for money. Additionally, the existing accommodation exceeds that which is required resulting in ongoing maintenance problems for that area not required for school purposes. A further consideration in this matter relates to the difficulties of adapting the existing accommodation to meet modern room layouts and standards.

The management authority of the school has been fully consulted in this matter. It is planned to advertise for the appointment of a design team to commence the architectural planning process shortly in compliance with normal public procurement procedures.
