Vol. 522 No. 4

Written Answers. - National Polls.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

56 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the progress made in regard to the introduction of electronic voting in the next general election; if it is intended to use electronic voting in some constituencies only; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18662/00]

Tenders have been invited for the necessary hardware and software for an electronic voting and counting system. When the successful contractor has been chosen and testing establishes that electronic voting and counting operates satisfactorily, the Government will consider using the equipment in a number of constituencies at the next general election. No decision has been taken at this stage on the constituencies in which electronic voting and counting will take place. In addition, amending legislation, which is being prepared at present, will have to be enacted.
