Vol. 523 No. 4

Business of Dáil.

I have a message from the Ceann Comhairle re extension of the time for the ringing of bells. At the request of the Whips the Ceann Comhairle has agreed to extend the time for the ringing of the bells for divisions to take account of the new accommodation arrangements up to the Christmas recess. The bells are now rung for six instead of four minutes as at present. The doors will continue to be locked after four minutes. Therefore, for divisions the bells will ring for six minutes and the doors will be locked four minutes thereafter. The bells for convening a sitting will also be rung for longer periods. No change is required for Standing Orders.

(Dublin West): Are you not afraid there might be demented Deputies going around muttering “the bells, the bells”?
