Vol. 523 No. 4

Written Answers. - Maternity Leave.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

198 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will extend the time period for maternity leave in view of the difficulty for mother and baby in adjusting to long periods of separation so soon after birth, particularly when the mother is breast feeding; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21281/00]

A review of maternity protection legislation is being carried out at present by a working group established by my Department. The working group, which has been set up in accordance with a commitment in the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness, comprises representatives of relevant Departments including the Departments of Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Social, Community and Family Affairs and Health and Children, the social partners and State agencies. The group first met on 14 April 2000 and eight meetings have been held to date. The next meeting is scheduled for 13 October. It is hoped to finalise the work of the group shortly after that date.

The group has considered a variety of issues in the course of its deliberations to date, including the question of an increase in the period of maternity leave.
