Vol. 523 No. 5

Written Answers. - Quality of Life Indicators.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

125 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans he has to introduce new quality of life indicators in the area of edu cation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20491/00]

Studies have shown that increased educational attainment enhances a person's earning capability and, by extension it can be assumed, the standard of living and quality of life, of that person. Through the European Community household panel, conducted by the ESRI, and other surveys, conducted on behalf of my Department, data in relation to the annual average earnings of men and women, relative to their level of educational attainment, are collated.

In addition, in the context of the national development plan, NDP, and the community support framework, CSF, for 2000-06, it has been agreed with the European Commission and the CSF evaluation unit in the Department of Finance to monitor a series of indicators at national level, including the educational attainment of the population.
