Brendan Howlin

Question:

16 Mr. Howlin asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the progress she has made in her discussions with the Department of Finance regarding the preparation of legislation to provide for a single financial regulator; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21563/00]

Michael Noonan

Question:

60 Mr. Noonan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the progress made in finalising legislation in conjunction with the Department of Finance for the insti tution of a single financial regulator; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21644/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 16 and 60 together.

Discussions have taken place between officials of my Department and of the Department of Finance and the matter is now being considered by myself and the Minister for Finance. When the outstanding issues have been settled, the Minister for Finance and I will bring proposals to Government for consideration and decision.

Following the Government's decision, I expect that any legislation required for the establishment of the authority would be promoted by the Minister for Finance.
