Question:

291 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of people who died by suicide in the first six months of 2000; and the number for the corresponding period in 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999. [22154/00]

Data on mortality are routinely published in the annual and quarterly reports on vital statistics compiled by the Central Statistics Office. The most recent figures available refer to the first quarter of 2000 and these are provided in the following table in addition to data for the corresponding period in 1996 to 1999.
