Question:

345 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the average price of a new and second hand house for a first time buyer in June 1997, June 1998, June 1999 and June 2000 as per his Department's statistics; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22383/00]

While my Department does not publish definitive information on the average house price paid by first time buyers, analysis of house purchase loan survey data available to my Department indicates that typical first time buyer prices are generally around 25-30% below the overall average house price. The survey, which includes information on about 30% of all mortgage based housing transactions, reveals the following trends in national average house prices purchased by first time buyers:
