Frances Fitzgerald

112 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources when new legis lation to deal with harassment of fishing vessels at sea will be introduced to enable the Naval Service to intervene effectively. [17471/00]

Willie Penrose

Question:

114 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources when he will bring to Government legislative proposals to tackle the growing problem of clashes between fishing vessels at sea. [22034/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 112 and 114 together.

The heads of the Law of the Sea (Prevention of Acts of Piracy) Bill, 2000, were approved by the Government on 4 October and have been transmitted to the Attorney General's office for drafting in the Office of the Parliamentary Counsel to the Government.

The target date for publication of this Bill in the Government legislation programme is mid-2001 but I am pressing for an earlier timetable.
