Vol. 524 No. 2

Written Answers. - Grant Payments.

Austin Deasy

Question:

149 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if grants were paid for aquaculture developments at Woodstown, County Waterford, when no licences for such developments had been granted; if so, the amount of such grants; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22175/00]

Seven pilot aquaculture projects received a total of £40,959 grant aid from BIM in 1995 to support trials to assess the suitability of sites at Woodstown for the cultivation of shellfish. One of the projects has subsequently moved to commercial production and the operation is fully licensed under the Fisheries (Amendment) Act, 1997.

Since the introduction of the 1997 Act pilot aquaculture projects, that is, those at the noncommercial feasibility stage, are now required to be licensed for the purposes of undertaking trials.
