There is a complex situation in the passenger transport market at present, with higher fares following the ending of duty free, the development of budget air services and also the beginning of repositioning of some airline capacity between different routes. The exchange rate appreciation of sterling also makes Ireland an attractive destination for UK passengers.
As regards capacity and handling capabilities in general, my Department is advised that the four passenger ports concerned are capable of handling just under 12 million passengers annually.
