Question:

186 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will outline in regard to the primary sector for the year 2000 or the most recent year for which figures are available the current standard per capita grant paid to schools, disadvantaged schools and gael scoileanna respectively and the number of students in these schools for which this grant is payable. [22533/00]

In the school year 1999-2000 the stan dard rate of capitation grant paid by my Department to primary schools was £64 per pupil. This grant was paid in respect of 444,310 pupils. A minimum grant of £3,840 was paid to all schools with enrolments of 60 pupils or less.

In the case of schools included in the disadvantaged areas scheme, supplementary capitation grants of £30 are paid in addition to the standard rate of grant. Some 72,957 pupils were covered by this scheme in the 1999-2000 school year. In addition, the supplementary grant of £30 per pupil was also paid in respect of 6,299 pupils included in the rural phase of the Breaking the Cycle scheme in 1999-2000.

In the case of gaelscoileanna, a supplementary capitation grant of £20 per pupil is payable in addition to the standard rate of grant. This grant was paid in respect of 28,455 pupils in gaelscoileanna in 1999-2000.
