Róisín Shortall

Question:

138 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if the review of the height regulations for the recruitment of gardaí referred to in reply to Parliamentary Question No. 187 of 7 June 2000 has yet been completed and considered by Government; if new height regulations will apply to his announcement on 11 October 2000 of the recruitment of 500 extra gardaí; if not, when the new regulations will come into force; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22818/00]

I established a Garda Síochána physical competence test review group in July to look at the question of pre-entry physical competence tests for applicants wishing to join the Garda Síochána. Part of its remit is to look at the validity of the present height requirements. The review group – comprising representatives of my Department, the Garda Síochána and one independent expert – will advise on physical competence tests and the relevancy of the height requirement and report back to me as soon as possible.

The Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) Regulations 1988, (S.I. No. 164 of 1988) set out the current qualifications for admission as a trainee, including the height requirement. If, following consideration of the report of the review group, I am of the view that any amendments of the regulations are deemed necessary, I will bring proposals to Government in the usual manner.
