Vol. 524 No. 4

Written Answers. - Industrial Disputes.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

74 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she will intervene to resolve the industrial dispute at Dublin Airport; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22793/00]

Minister for Public Enterprise (Mrs. O'Rourke): As I said in my reply to private notice questions on 17 October 2000, I am very much aware of and regret the inconvenience caused to Aer Lingus's customers as a result of industrial disputes in the company, particularly in relation to the 24-hour stoppage of Tuesday last. I also very much regret their effects on the tourism, consumer and business sectors of the economy.
In my earlier reply, I outlined the position regarding each of the disputes. In relation to the cabin crew who took industrial action last Tuesday, I am pleased to advise that both Aer Lingus and their union, IMPACT, have been invited by the Labour Relations Commission to talks this afternoon, 19 October 2000.
Direct talks between the company and representatives of baggage handlers, clerical and catering staff are also taking place this week. It is my hope that progress will by made during these discussions and, if necessary, speedy reference of any outstanding matters can be made to the Labour Relations Commission or the Labour Court as the case may be.
