Vol. 524 No. 6

Written Answers. - General Practitioner Posts.

Liz McManus

Question:

216 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Health and Children the progress made to curtail the falling number of general practitioners; and if he will respond to the falling numbers and Irish Medical Organisation's warning about the number of GPs. [23584/00]

I am not aware of falling numbers of general practitioners. On the contrary, I am informed that there were 180 applications for 54 places on the GP vocational training programme this year. The overall manpower requirements of general practice will be one of the areas which will be considered in the light of the review of general practice being undertaken by the chief executive officers which I expect will be completed shortly.
