Vol. 524 No. 6

Written Answers. - Agenda 2000.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

154 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if his attention has been drawn to the potential challenges to the Irish agricultural sector in the context of Agenda 2000; if he has satisfied himself that the industry can be safeguarded with particular reference for the need to maintain employment in the producer and processor sectors and maintain a dominant position in European and other markets; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23375/00]

The Agenda 2000 package delivered major benefits to Ireland, and this has been widely recognised and confirmed by independent research. The capacity of the agri-food sector to maintain, and indeed strengthen, its position on export markets will be primarily determined by its competitiveness and innovation. The benefits of agenda 2000 will also be of assistance particularly in regard to protecting an adequate and reliable supply of raw material.
