Vol. 524 No. 6

Written Answers. - Harbours and Piers.

Michael Ring

Question:

164 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the up to date position on works to a pier (details supplied) in County Mayo; if a contractor was appointed; and when the works will commence. [23544/00]

The pier in question is owned by Mayo County Council and its repair and maintenance is the responsibility of the local authority in the first instance.

The pier is among the piers and harbour projects in County Mayo which were submitted to my Department in a three year programme by Mayo County Council for funding support earlier this year. While significant funding has been allocated in respect of harbour works in County Mayo this year, it was not possible, having regard to overall harbour development requirements, to provide funding for works at the pier in question. The possibility of providing financial assistance for works at this location will, however, be kept under review by my Department, in consultation with the local authority, in the drawing up of fishery harbour programmes for future years.
