Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - Medical Indemnity Scheme.

Bernard Allen

Question:

434 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the proposals he is considering for including category two consultants involved in full-time private practice in the new medical indemnity scheme. [23853/00]

Category II consultants are consultants employed in the public hospital system who have the right to treat patients in private hospitals. Their public hospital practice, including the treatment of private patients, will be covered by the proposed medical indemnity scheme. They will remain responsible for indemnifying themselves in respect of their off-site private practice.

The proposed scheme will not cover consultants who are in full-time private practice. However, it is not the intention that the proposed changes in the indemnity arrangements for the public hospital system should have any adverse effect on the cost of indemnity for consultants in the private sector.
