Bernard Allen

Question:

457 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has satisfied himself that there is no gender bias in the prevention and treatment of heart disease because risk factors are similar to men and women. [24078/00]

"Building Healthier Hearts", the cardiovascular health strategic report contains 211 recommendations aimed at reducing the incidence of cardiovascular disease in Ireland over the coming years. Health promotion initiatives targeting the reduction in heart related disease are a central focus of the implementation of the report. In this regard, awareness campaigns and associated activities are being undertaken nationwide. On 20 September this year "Ireland needs a change of heart" was launched . This campaign aims to influence lifestyle choices amongst both men and women around issues such as smoking, diet and physical activity.

Treatment services continue to be provided through general practitioners and hospitals based on clinical need. The issue of patient gender is irrelevant.
