Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - Roads Funding.

Willie Penrose

Question:

679 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the amounts furnished to local authorities in the Shannon catchment area for the purpose of raising roads which are subject to flooding; the reason he failed to allocate similar grant applications to Westmeath County Council and Athlone Urban District Council for the same purpose of raising roads subject to flooding in the Shannon basin area around Athlone, County Westmeath; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24460/00]

My Department has not provided grants for road authorities within the non-national roads programme 2000 for the purpose referred to. As an exceptional measure, however, my Department has recently authorised Roscommon County Council to carry out works in relation to certain flood affected roads in anticipation of allocations under the local authority's non-national road grants for 2001.

Question:

680 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will provide a detailed listing of the amounts notified to each local authority in August 2000 for class three local roads; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24461/00]

Paul McGrath

Question:

719 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the additional funds recently approved for county roads for each local authority; the criteria used in assessing these allocations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24849/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 680 and 719 together.

Details of the allocations for class III county roads for 2000 are set out in the following table. The allocations to each county council are generally determined on the basis of the length of local tertiary, class III, road in the county. Total requirements of less than £50,000 are rounded up to that figure, while amounts between £50,000 and £75,000 and between £75,000 and £100,000 are rounded up to £75,000 and £100,000 respectively.
