Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

923 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science the facilities his Department will provide for a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12 to learn sign language in order that she can communicate with her two year old daughter who is severely deaf; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24798/00]

The particular case raised by the Deputy has not previously been brought to my Department's attention. I am aware that some parents avail of tuition in sign language through night classes provided by local vocational education committees.

I understand that the child in question is currently in receipt of support from the visiting teacher service operated by my Department, I have asked my Department's inspectorate to make contact with the person in question regarding her tuition needs.
