Gay Mitchell

Question:

167 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children his views on sports sponsorship by promoters of alcohol products in view of his stated objection to tobacco sponsorship. [24470/00]

Charles Flanagan

Question:

170 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans, if any, the Government has to introduce legislation to curb public advertising and regulate event sponsorship by companies engaged in the sale and promotion of intoxicating liquor; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19438/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 167 and 170 together.

I have no plans at present to introduce legislation in relation to the matters raised by the Deputies. However, the health promotion unit of my Department has commissioned research into the impact of alcohol advertising on young people which should be completed early next year. The outcome of this research will inform future initiatives in this area.
